What is a Transmission and why do I need it?
Automatic transmissions are part of your powertrain which has many functions, but typically for your different speeds for take off power as well as better fuel economy and last it allows you to come to a stop without stalling the motor in the way of the torque convertor.
What causes my transmission to wear out or have problems?
Most causes of premature transmission failure are aggressive driving, manual down shifting at high speeds, and lack of transmission fluid and filter changes. Most people will do regular oil changes to the motor but neglect to do so with the transmission.
Should I always choose to fit a new transmission?
Typically you would think so but that is not always true. The reason is when the large car manufacturers produce vehicles, they are by law required to keep in stock new transmissions for a couple of years after the car has been built. Then after that only rebuilds are available. Now here is the difference, some transmissions,( typically new productions) have a lot of issues and takes two to four years to work out the bugs. These problems are called TSB'S, technical service bulletins. And as they are being built on the assembly lines some TSB's are rectified and some are not. But once they are built that is the way they are sold. They do not go back into the trans to correct any new issues, And that my friend is the problem! You do not know if your transmission is from new and has all the latest TSB'S? Typically when you get your transmission built by a reputable shop they will perform all the latest updates to your transmission thus having a longer transmission life.
Is there any significant difference between transmission in US v Foreign cars and trucks?
The difference between the foreign transmission and American would really be the parts accessibility , they tend to be a lot more expensive due to shipping and low volumes being in demand. But for the most part they are equally challenging.
